Our journey to...
Sheung Wan
Sheung Wan, a place with vital historic meanings, It was the earliest occupied area in 1842 by the British troop. The occupation of Hong Kong Island began at Possession Street, which was the shoreline at that time, `You can find a plaque in Hollywood Road Park about the British Occupation.
This journey to Sheung Wan has opened a door for us to see the cultural sides of Hong Kong!
Hey, travellers! Are you ready to start the journey? Let's Go!!
As you can see on the map, Sheung Wan is located on the north-west of Hong Kong Island, surrounded by Central in the east and Sai Ying Pun in the west. In the north, you can appreciate the whole view of the Victoria Habour and wander around the Mid-levels in the south.
Judging from the location, Sheung Wan seems like the epitome of Hong Kong. If Hong Kong is hailed as the center of cultural exchange between the east and the west, Sheung Wan is a hub connecting the past and the modern society. Through observation, it is clearly to distinguish that the eastern part of Sheung Wan is for commercial use while the western part is mainly for residential and recreational uses such as the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park.
Hong Kong people have long been plagued by the serious air pollution, especially people living in the urban districts. Walking past the Central and Sheung Wan, the difference of air pollution can be felt in spite of the proximity between two districts . The air pollution in Sheung Wan is more lenient because of the lower population density and lower number of vehicles passing through.
Compared to Central, the living pace of people is slower. In there, regardless of buildings and shops, you will find it exotic and distinctive. Wandering around the Dried Seafood street, various products such as bird’s nest, ginseng and abalone can be seen. Some shoppers sell the products on the ground floors, the rest of floors are for living. It is quite unique in Hong Kong!
The terrain here is rugged, therefore some buildings and streets are built on the mid-levels, slope. Famous examples include Museum of Medical Science and Mid Level Escalator.
