Hi, travelers! Can you tell me what are you travelling for? For food? For shopping? For experience?

The Cultural Critic :

As for us, the cultures, histories and reflections behind the sceneries are what we are searching for.

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeKing new landscapes, but in having new eyes.                                              – Marcel Proust

Walking along Hollywood Road, and walking up the Aberdeen Street, you can see a sophisticated white building. It is PMQ, Police Married Quarters. PMQ has changed its uses throughout the years. It was once the Central School which our Father of the nation, Dr. Sun Yat-sen has studied in. After being damaged during war fire, it was demolished and reconstructed to be the Police Married Quarters. Now, it was revitalized. It was opened for local designers, stores and restaurants etc, to showcase their creative products and services at an affordable rent.

Revitalization

- Our Future Direction

In terms of creativity, cultural and tourist industries’ development, it was such a good change! On one hand, it definitely provides a platform for local creators to shine. It encourages them to motivate the creativity and innovation in Hong Kong. On the other hand, the diverse content of PMQ attracts tourists, teenagers, art lovers and lifestyle consumers. It can boost the flow of people in the district. It creates more economic opportunities for not only the shops inside PMQ, but also the bars, restaurants and stores nearby. Therefore, it is an all-win situation in this revitalization.

Sheng Wan is a place where collective memorial pieces of Hong Kong gathered and find their own way to survive. The dry seafood street (Des Voeux Road West), Western Market and Wing Lee Street are some representable examples. To me, I would say revitalization is the future direction of Hong Kong’s cultural development. Referencing from PMQ’s success, local cultural tour can be launched in order to refresh and reboot Hong Kong’s tourist industry.

There are night markets held consistently in PMQ !
